"Hello
Zindagi...zindagi nooor hai..." ...goes the song and so do we go in a different world, a world where we ge rid of all our tensions, worries, sorrows, frustrations and all that remains is the subtle voice generated through the vocal chords of a divine soul.... Jagjit Singh. Ghazals was just limited to those who had a love for Urdu and a class that enjoyed the poetry embedded in the classics of maestros like Ghulam Ali, untill the common man started accepting Ghazal as an easy cake ...thanx to the King, Jagjit Singh. Ghazals found their real place in films when Arth and Saath Saath were released and people were gifted with Ghazals like "Tumko Dekha...", "Tere Khushboo Mein Base Khat Mein Jalaata Kaise", "Hothon Se Chu Lo Tum" etc etc. Today I am still dependent on Jagjit Singh's songs, when I feel lonely or low at the end of the day. Just listening to one of his songs, rejuvenates the lost spirit and sublimates the solitude, for his "sur" are so divine and passionate that you tend to ride on them just like riding on a floating cloud in the skies. What makes Jagjit Singh such a special singer ???? Yeah !!! I know this question haunts a lot of people.... especially Ghulam Ali fans ( my cousin being one of them) with whom I always have a debate (sorry folks and sorry Mr. Ali, I am not comparing you ), but there is something special about Jagjit. Have you noticed his selection of poems ?? It's different as he doesn't go behind the glamour and the fame of the poet, but selects the poems who appeal him a lot in their essence, their substance! And yo yo..... what should one say about his voice !!! I am not that liable to be able to speak about his voice but still being a musician, I can analyse his singing!! Just look at the bass (low pitch) that his voice has got !! Believe me, but very few people sound so sweet as Jagjitji in such a low pitch. Hey...if u r a good observer (if not observe him) then you must have seen how his vocal chords & his "gaala" vibrate along with his typical vertical and horizontal movements of his head (gala),when he takes those "harqats" so easily. Jagjit Singh makes Ghazal singing look so easy that one doesn't understand that actually the "sur" that he is rendeing is such a difficult one. All my musician and music loving friends will understand - "It's so difficult to compose and further sing a simple tune!!" My Personal favorites of Jagjeet Singh are :
But this definitely does not mean that I don't like the other Jagjeet Songs. |
